Quilts for Preemies

Two area hospitals use 80 preemie quilts a month. Individual guild members and Bees are active in helping provide these quilts. The basic size requested is 16 X 16 inches, but they do not have to be square and can range from 14-20 inches, since preemies vary in size also! The quilt must be comfortable and washable. Traditional binding is fine, but there quilts are often sewn “envelope-style.” Cotton batting should be low loft – or none at all to improve the drape. A cotton top with a flannel backing and no batting works nicely.

This is a great opportunity to practice your machine quilting skills on a small piece. If you choose to tie your quilt, be careful to clip threads SHORT to prevent tangles around TINY fingers and toes. If you are really ambitious, hand quilting is always lovely, too.
